Things to Look For in a Digital Photo Frame

Digital frames have been around for a while now but they have changed in terms of price and capabilities. The latest digital photo frames are very advanced. When trying to choose a suitable frame you should think about a few important factors.

The frame size and resolution is important. Most manufacturers sell each  digital picture frame in a range of different sizes. The most common sizes are 4”x6”, 5”x7” and 8”x10” although you may now find even larger versions. The size you choose comes down to personal choice. The relationship between size and screen resolution is important as this will determine the quality of the image. Resolution is measured in Pixels much like TV screens and digital cameras themselves. Basically the higher the resolution, the better the picture quality. As a guide, a resolution of 800×600 pixels will be fine for up to a 7” frame.

The aspect ratio relates to the display format. Most cameras take pictures in 4:3 aspect ratio and therefore this is also recommended for the digital photo frame. If the frames aspect ratio is significantly different to that of the photos, the pictures may be cropped and not fully displayed.

How pictures are loaded and stored by the digital picture frame. Pictures can usually be loaded in several ways. The most common ways are from SD card, wirelessly via Wi-Fi, by USB cable and even via email. Many modern digital frames have their own internal memory which can be great for managing your pictures.

Other features you may consider important. It is possible to have a frame that can: play video and sound; play random slideshows with audio; display different transitions. Other features include timers to automatically switch the frame off at certain times – overnight for example – to help save energy.

Check the details of a digital frame before you make a decision. Try to match the capabilities of the frame to your most important needs to get the best value.
