Creating Memories with Underwater Digital Cameras

Memories can be and are often created and it is great to be able to capture those memories so as to be able to reflect on them in the future. It is now possible to capture memories even when they occur underwater since the creation of underwater digital camera.

For those that are unsure, an underwater digital camera is not just for capturing memories, they are used by photography professionals – otherwise known as marine photographers – and they are used by marine biologists, and scientists.

But I can safely assume that you are wishing to purchaser one of these waterproof digital cameras for your next visit to the beach with your kids. Either that, or you are a photo junky that wants to take pictures underwater without running the risk of trashing your much loved camera.

It is important to know that waterproof cameras in general are NOT entirely waterproof. The term waterproof more precisely refers to the cameras ability to resist water at certain levels and a waterproof camera is NOT necessarily designed to take pictures under the water. If you want to take pictures under the water it becomes necessary for you to buy a specialty underwater digital camera.

Now, due to the fact that cameras are electronic, underwater digital cameras have been somewhat of a rarity. The closest thing that most people will find to an underwater digital camera is the specially designed camera casings that make it possible for you to protect your camera from water and water pressure. These casings are only guaranteed to keep the water out in certain depths and if you go deeper than the manufacturer recommends, you are likely to find yourself in the market for a new camera as well.

When taking pictures under water it is also a good idea to understand a little bit about how light diffuses when under water. Because of the red spectrum, your images will appear darker than they did when you took them. It is possible to use the white balance feature that most cameras have to balance the overall luminosity of the image. It is also a good idea to use your camera’s view finder when underwater due to the fact that images become distorted when underwater and you may not get the desired result when using your camera’s rear display.

Last of all, it is extremely important to thoroughly rinse the salt water from your camera case before storing it. Salt can crystallize and this crystallized salt can get in to the seal of your case, thus making it un-waterproof and that would be a waste.
